Carbon is not the membrane. The membrane retains, while the carbon treats what passes through by remaining dissolved: chlorine, pesticides, organic residues, and especially taste. These discs are changed much more often than the main cartridge, which is why they are sold in packs of five. When the water regains a taste, it's the carbon that needs changing, not the cartridge.
