Copper EDC: 9 copper items that develop a patina over time
Lamp, knife, pen, flask and bronze watch: everyday copper objects that develop a unique patina over the months.
Copper is neither stronger nor lighter than titanium or steel. We choose it for one reason, and it is enough: it lives. Shiny on the first day, it darkens, marbles, and takes on a unique patina over the months. Two copper objects never age the same way.
Here are the copper objects the team finds most successful. Outpost does not have any in stock at the moment: for each, we offer you two alternatives available in the store.

Living with copper
Patina. Copper oxidizes on contact with air and skin: it goes from salmon to brown, and sometimes to verdigris in the crevices. To speed up the patina, some expose it to vinegar fumes or a hard-boiled egg in a closed box. To restore the shine, a little lemon juice and salt is enough.
Limitations. Copper is heavy and soft: it scratches and dents. It can also leave a green mark on the skin or fingers. That is the price of its character.
Copper, brass, bronze. Brass is an alloy of copper and zinc, more golden. Bronze combines copper with tin or aluminum: harder, it patinas more slowly, hence its success in watchmaking.
Frequently asked questions
- Is copper antibacterial?
- Yes, copper has a recognized antimicrobial effect on its surfaces, which is why it is found on some hospital door handles. On an EDC item, it is a bonus, not a reason to buy.
- How do you care for a copper item?
- Nothing is mandatory. To preserve the patina, a dry cloth is enough. To restore the shine, a mixture of lemon and salt, or a copper product, followed by rinsing and drying.
