Vector Optics Forester 8-16x56 ED Monocular
A 56 mm objective lens is what allows for zooming up to 16x without the image quality collapsing. That is the whole point of this combination, and it is evident directly from the designation.
What the zoom really changes
The exit pupil—the diameter of the beam exiting the eyepiece—is equal to the objective lens divided by the magnification. Here:
- at 8x: 7 mm, which is as much as a dilated human pupil can accept
- at 16x: 3.5 mm, which remains comfortable in daylight
In other words, the 56 mm is not excessive: it is what makes the zoom range viable.
ED glass
ED stands for extra-low dispersion. This type of glass limits chromatic aberration, the colored fringe that appears on high-contrast edges—a branch against the sky, a roof against a bright background. It is most visible at high magnifications, which is precisely where this monocular operates.
What to expect handheld
Up to 8x or 10x, observation can be done handheld without discomfort. Beyond that, the natural trembling of the hand becomes visible in the image: at 16x, plan for some support—a tree, a bag, a tripod.
The format
A monocular fits in a pocket, is used with one hand, and requires no interpupillary adjustment. It is the compromise: less comfort than a pair of binoculars over time, much less bulk.
