Vector Optics Forester 20-60x60 Spotting Scope
Twenty to sixty times: we are beyond what a pair of binoculars can do. A spotting scope is not a big pair of binoculars; it is an instrument for fixed-position use.
What the zoom really implies
The exit pupil is equal to the objective lens divided by the magnification:
- at 20x: 3 mm - clear and comfortable image
- at 60x: 1 mm - significantly darker image
This is the rule for all zoom spotting scopes, not a flaw of this specific one: the high range is used to examine a detail when the light is good, not for continuous observation.
The tripod is not an option
From 20x upwards, no hand can hold the image steady. Beyond 40x, air turbulence itself becomes visible - this is the shimmering seen above hot ground. Plan for a stable mount: this is what makes the difference between a usable image and a blurry one.
The 60 mm objective lens
It is this that collects the light and makes the high range usable. On a spotting scope, the objective diameter is the primary constraint on weight and price.
For which uses
Stationary long-distance observation: hides, observation posts, reading targets at a shooting range. Anything done from a location where you remain in one place.
