A whistle carries further than the voice, doesn't cause fatigue, and works when you no longer have the breath to shout. That is why it is on every emergency gear list. This one is made of polypropylene, weighs 15 grams, and its internal geometry is calculated so that a light breath produces a loud sound: this counts when you are exhausted, injured, or freezing. The orange color is a deliberate choice; it is the color of distress, the one that is visible in vegetation and on snow. Attach it to a backpack strap or a vest, do not store it at the bottom of a pocket.
