A deliberately oversized ferrocerium rod: 100 millimeters long by 10 in diameter. The advantage is not cosmetic. A long rod provides room to scrape along its entire length, while a thick rod lasts for hundreds of ignitions and is easier to hold with gloves. The sparks produced reach approximately 3,000°C, enough to catch on cotton wool or dry bark in any weather. The spine of the Hultafors OK1 and OK4 knife blades serves as a striker.
