It all started with a pair of climbing pants. In the late 1960s, Californian climber Royal Robbins designed a pair of pants tougher than the ones he wore at Yosemite and named them after a rock climbing difficulty rating: 5.11.

In 1992, the FBI academy chose these pants to equip its recruits. Law enforcement followed, and in 2003, the line became a standalone company, 5.11 Tactical, which expanded its range to include shirts, shoes, bags, and accessories.
